★ Every Story Matters. See yours more clearly.

When Living by Drift needs to become deliberate.

G'day, I'm Richard Paterson. I notice things about people, workplaces, relationships, organisations, and society. Often they are things that have become so familiar that we no longer notice them at all.

What if the problem isn't what you're looking at, but how you're seeing it? Sometimes what we need isn't another solution or another answer. Sometimes we need another lens.

👁 See things differently
The Core Concept

What exactly is a Social Optometrist?

Fair question.

An optometrist helps you see more clearly. I do something similar, just not with your eyesight.

I look at situations, behaviours, patterns, relationships, and environments, and ask questions that can easily be missed when you are standing in the middle of them.

I like looking again, because sometimes seeing something differently is the beginning of doing something differently. I help people and organisations see with greater clarity what matters, understand what it means, and create a better way forward.

Self Check

How do you know if you are living in drift?

Drift is sneaky. You can have a thriving business, commercial success, and good people around you, while quietly feeling carried away by currents you never consciously chose. Tap any statement that sounds familiar:

Sign 01 • Common

"I am succeeding on paper, but I wake up feeling empty."

You tick all the boxes people expect from you, yet none of the wins feel genuinely fulfilling anymore.

Sign 02 • Critical

"My decisions are driven by other people's expectations."

Your calendar is full of obligations you never deliberately chose. You are running everyone else's race.

Sign 03 • Turning Point

"I am at a massive crossroads and do not know what I want."

A big decision is looming (business, succession, family, or career), but your internal compass feels foggy.

Sign 04 • Overload

"The mental weight I am carrying is starting to crack me."

You can carry plenty of physical cargo, but the silent psychological load has nowhere safe to be unpacked.

Where you are now

Living by Drift

  • You react to whatever screams loudest.
  • Your identity is glued to what you do rather than who you are.
  • Decisions feel heavy, foggy, and lonely.
  • You wonder: "Is this really all there is?"
Where we take you

Living Deliberately

  • You steer with intention and clear boundaries.
  • Who you are comes before what you do.
  • Decisions flow from your own core values.
  • Your time, energy, and resources have real purpose.
Methodology

How I work

Over time, I realised there is a simple pattern behind much of what comes naturally to me: Notice → Interpret → Apply. When working with you, that translates into three clear steps:

01

See

See more clearly what is actually happening. We take an honest look at the situation, the blind spots, and the things that have become too familiar to notice.

02

Understand

Understand what it means and what might sit underneath it. We examine the patterns, the human load, and the context that created this reality.

03

Act

Decide what, if anything, you want to do about it. I am not interested in telling you what your life or organisation should look like. I help you make deliberate choices about what you would prefer.

The Framework

The Preferred Reality Lens™

At the heart of the Preferred Reality Lens™ is something very simple: there is the reality we are currently experiencing, and there is a reality we would prefer. Somewhere between the two is a gap. Four perspectives help us explore it:

P1
Predicament

What is actually happening now?

We see our current reality as clearly and honestly as we can. Not to judge it or immediately fix it, but to accurately recognise where we are standing.

P2
Patterns

What has contributed to this?

Realities rarely appear overnight. Habits form, expectations accumulate, and pressures repeat. Seeing the pattern gives you the choice to change it.

P3
Preferred Reality

What would you prefer instead?

I deliberately say preferred rather than ideal or perfect. A Preferred Reality is a clear direction. What would better actually look like for you?

P4
Pathway

What might move us in that direction?

What deliberate actions can begin moving you forward? Instead of drifting wherever circumstances carry you, you begin actively choosing what comes next.

The Core Question: Where are we now, where would we prefer to be, and what might help us move in that direction?

The Social Optometrist Lens

Seeing your circumstances from 30,000 feet.

When you are stuck inside the frame, it is almost impossible to see the picture. Through deep listening and our 4-P framework, we bring the fog into sharp focus so you can see your current reality, understand the patterns, and identify a pathway forward with total clarity.

Why This Matters

Too many good people are trapped inside the jar of drift.

We live in a culture that rewards keeping your head down and grinding. We put on a brave face, answer "flat out, mate!" and convince ourselves that strong leaders just push through alone.

Before long, you feel like the person inside that glass jar: surrounded by noise and endless demands, but disconnected from what actually matters to you.

My mission is to help you take the lid off, step out into the open, and see your whole picture clearly with someone in your corner.

Where This Takes Me

Speaking & Working with Me

I don't arrive with a predetermined catalogue of canned solutions looking for somewhere to apply them. I start by becoming curious about what you are seeing, what you might not be seeing, and what you would prefer the reality to look like.

Keynotes & Events

Speaking that helps people see differently

My background as a teacher taught me that information and understanding are not the same thing. People rarely remember bullet points, but they remember a story that helps them make sense of their own lives.

  • Keynotes on drift, deliberate living, and the Preferred Reality Lens™.
  • Humorous, observation-led Australian storytelling with real depth.
  • Conferences, leadership retreats, and industry summits.
Individuals & Leaders

Personal consultations

There are times when we know something in our life isn't quite where we'd prefer it to be, but we are too close to see it clearly. An outside set of eyes can help you find your bearings.

  • Confidential sounding board for leaders facing a major crossroads.
  • Moving from escaping what you don't want to choosing what you prefer.
  • Tailored 1-on-1 advisory with zero pressure and zero canned advice.
Curiosity In Action

Ideas, Projects & Commentary

Curiosity has a habit of taking me places. Sometimes an everyday observation becomes a video or an article. Sometimes a question stays with me long enough to become an entire project.

Documentary Project

Mateship Matters

What makes a good mate? And how can I be one?

Mateship is central to Australian culture. Yet for something we value so highly, we spend remarkably little time deliberately thinking about how to do it well. Mateship Matters explores what strengthens it, what threatens it, and why it matters too much to leave to chance.

Core Concept

Recognise the Rip

Sometimes we choose our direction. Sometimes we drift into it.

A swimmer caught in a rip doesn't make a bad decision; they simply enter a current they didn't recognise and find themselves carried somewhere they never intended to go. Life works the same way through unexamined expectations and habits.

Community & Conversation

OpenTable Dinners

Change doesn't happen in a vacuum. It happens around a table.

Gathering people from all walks of life around good food for genuine, unscripted human conversation. No corporate posturing. Just authentic human hospitality and real connection.

Behind the Lens

Why do I see the world the way I do?

I've lived and worked in some very different worlds: business, education, men's health, ministry, chaplaincy, counselling, and some very challenging seasons in my own life. Together, they have shaped my lens.

Training as a primary teacher taught me how people learn, and that knowing something is very different from helping someone else understand it. Years in sales and sales management gave me commercial acumen and an understanding of the performance realities businesses face.

“
When I found my why, my how found me.

Raising a child completely on my own as a solo dad taught me about responsibility, resilience, and overload in ways no course ever could. Working alongside families facing critical illness taught me that the presenting problem is rarely the whole story.

Counselling and chaplaincy taught me to listen differently and resist assuming I understand someone simply because I understand their situation. Every story has context.

Common Questions

Straight answers before we chat

Will you try to hard-sell me on a high-ticket coaching program?+

Not a chance. I don't arrive with a catalogue of solutions looking for somewhere to apply them. Our first conversation is simply to see if there is genuine mutual fit and whether the way I see things might be useful to you.

Is this clinical psychology or crisis counselling?+

No. I am not a psychiatrist, psychologist, or medical practitioner. The Preferred Reality Lens™ is an advisory and perspective framework. If someone is experiencing acute clinical distress, I actively connect them with licensed healthcare professionals.

What actually happens in our first chat?+

You tell me what you are seeing. I listen, ask some clarifying questions, and together we see whether my outside eyes can help uncover a better way forward.

Do you work with organisations as well as individuals?+

Yes. I work across Australia and internationally delivering keynote speaking, executive leadership sessions, and workplace workshops on human load and psychosocial safety.
